The Stock Market
It’s possible to achieve capital growth and therefore income by choosing public companies which are listed on one of the stock markets and purchasing shares in the company. As you purchase the shares, you purchase them at a certain rate and once you’ve bought them, if that company performs and increases in value as a company, your shares price, which is the value of the company divided by the number of shares, will increase in value.
Shares should not be considered a short-term investment because of market fluctuations. Obviously, the stock market is a risky option when it comes to investment, especially if you’re investing yourself and not using a professional who understands the trends and understands the macro and micro economical factors driving the business..
When you buy shares, the profits are either reinvested or you can take the profits out as shareholder dividends. Obviously, when it comes to risk, if you’re investing in one small company that is new or relatively unknown, the risk can be very high and it is potentially a volatile market you’re investing in. You could make quick gains or quick losses. If you’re investing in the FTSE 100 companies, there will be less risk. These companies have attained a solid status. So perhaps investing in a FTSE, 100, or FTSE 500 Company may well be a less risky option than smaller companies. The old adage, “don’t put all of your eggs in one basket”, holds true in stock market investment. Investments should be spread across geographical areas and across different sectors. The rationale behind this is that unrelated markets are less likely to collapse simultaneously than those that are inherently tied by banking or economic indicators.
Investing in the stock market is an interesting, fun, and fairly easy process. There are now dozens of websites out there where you can do your research, buy shares for a commission per trade or a monthly commission, and you can make yourself into a stock breaker almost instantly. There are also obviously opportunities to talk to an experienced trader who will be able to give you advice and manage your portfolio for you.
