Oncor Urges Consumers — Stay Away from Trees in Power Lines : Lifetime of Safety tips for July ask Texans to not prune trees within 10 feet of power lines

DALLAS (PRWEB) July 9, 2008

Many Texans are tempted at this time of the year to prune their trees out of power lines. For safety reasons, Oncor asks that consumers do not go within 10 feet of tree limbs in high voltage lines. Oncor arranges for trees to be pruned around its power lines and equipment. To report a tree within 10 feet of power lines that is causing a potentially hazardous condition like sparking, consumers should call the number on their electric bill.

A consistent source of shock injuries and electrocutions each year occur when people accidentally come into contact with power lines while pruning trees. Every year in Texas, people are injured or even killed when they climb or prune trees near power lines. Tree limbs in contact with power lines can act as conductors, and a person can be seriously injured if contact is made.

While Oncor urges consumers to not prune near high voltage power lines, homeowners are responsible for pruning near service lines that run from the pole to the meter on their house. Remember — never attempt to prune main lines that run pole to pole.

Oncor offers these tips for tree pruning:

Remember, for safety reasons, Oncor asks that consumers maintain a 10-foot distance from tree limbs in lines. This means that consumers should never prune trees that touch power lines. Hire an expert – look for a tree pruning company with an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) to prune near service lines. If you decide to prune a service line yourself, call the number on your electric bill BEFORE pruning to arrange for power to be turned off. For a fee, power can be disconnected from an individual home and re-connected the same day. If a tree falls into a power line, call the number on your electric bill. Don’t touch anything that comes into contact with the line. If the power line falls, leave the area immediately and call 9-1-1. The MultiSmart range of products from MultiTrode has been described as one of the best advances in water & wastewater technology in more than a decade. This video interview provides an insight into the technology platforms and the challenges of bringing such a powerful product to the market.

The MultiSmart pump station manager incorporates an advanced lift station controller, a flexible and open RTU, a PLC, voltage, energy and current monitoring and other control panel components – all in one unit. Paul Gibson describes how the 12 person MultiTrode R&D team started from scratch after throwing out over M of existing code development, and how they took a number of proven elements from other industries to create the MultiSmart architecture.

A lot of open source software, including Linux, was used, some code, like IsaGRAF and DNP3 was bought in, but most of the code was developed in house.

“We’ve used a lot of open source software, such as Linux, to get the device up and running.. we didn’t want to use too much open source software, because in the end we still needed to test that software, to make sure it was robust for this industry.”

Paul discusses how a project with 10 software engineers and 2 hardware engineers is kept on track, which parts of the project went well and which parts went badly. The user interface, one of the elements that really sets apart the product from others in the industry, was particularly challenging and consumed much more development time than expected.

The interview also covers the Outpost2 SCADA product, build around the MultiSmart capabilities, and PumpView, the hosted SCADA platform for smaller utilities. Outpost2 is built on Iconics Genesis32 and creates a platform with over 400 tags per site to open up the full functionality of MultiSmart at the SCADA end.

PumpView is built on Java and J2EE, MySQL and Hibernate and uses the cellular network to communicate with remote sites.

New Web Filtering Technology Addresses Internet’s Rapid Expansion

Bloxx Inc., the enterprise web filtering specialist, announced today that Woods Services has successfully reduced IT costs and improved employee productivity and Internet security after installing two Bloxx Tru-View Technology appliances just over a year ago.

Woods Services, a Pennsylvania-based organization dedicated to serving people with special needs, had previously been struggling to manage two solutions, a Microsoft ISA server and a URL database Internet filter, to monitor the online activity of students, residents and staff. Adding to the difficulty of dueling solutions, upgrades and automatic updates to the URL database frequently failed to occur.

Manually updating the list of websites to be blocked was a drain on Woods’ IT resources. Skipped updates also precipitated an increase in the use of anonymous proxies, which allow users to easily bypass Web filters and access the sites of their choice. Hundreds of new anonymous proxies are created every day, and if not added to a URL database, they render Internet filters useless.

The Bloxx Web filtering appliance with Tru-View Technology improves upon traditional filtering, which relies only on URL databases and key words. These first- and second-generation methods are quickly growing obsolete as the Internet expands and anonymous proxies and other avoidance techniques gain speed. Tru-View’s ability to analyze, categorize and filter websites in real time with multi-tiered filtering algorithms, coupled with URL databases and keyword scoring, keeps pace with these changes. Tru-View automatically categorizes and filters up to six million Web pages a day–including all pages not listed in the URL database.
