How to make money online
Making money online has become easier over the years as access to the tools that are required to build a website, and to market the website, has become available to a larger number of people. Indeed today all you really need is a computer and a bit of know-how and you can start making money online.
Businesses can be started in any sector and selling any product (or even without a product just selling information), even giving information away and providing some adverts. You can’t find the adverts? Well, all you need to do is go to one of the many providers that put in context ads on your site and you just start making money. The process really is that easy.
What’s the struggle then? The struggle is that there are so many people websites out there. The competition, especially in the major markets (finance property travel), is huge. In many sectors you’re looking at over 20 million websites as your competitors, so the challenge is either to find the niche where you can provide something valuable or go to a major sector and really provide a terrific website that is going to get people talking about it (and get yourself extremely wealthy very quickly).
So in essence, in a marketing context, you either got to go for a main keyword, such as travel or mortgage, or go for a long-tailed approach whereby you’re going for niche keywords, such as mortgage for buy-to-let in Southampton. So you’re either going for the big site route where it’s going to be a long hard struggle, or you’re going for perhaps a smarter way and looking for a niche.
In niches, you can be more successful more quickly because obviously there’s less competition. If the content that you are describing in your website is found to be valuable, is unique and matches the criteria of the search engine algorithm being searched (such as Google or Yahoo or Bing or MSN) better than other sites, it will be high in the search rankings. So for example, if you type in gobbledygook into a search engine, a website that doesn’t have gobbledygook on it’s web page or in anchor text pointing to that web page, web page won’t show up. So when you’re looking at a long-tailed approach, you’re looking at targeting specific keywords that other people aren’t necessarily targeting. For example, at the moment, my brother is setting up an Expat site for Bulgaria. He’s writing a lot of unique content and he’s getting hits and visitors within weeks of the site going up because the content is so unique, and because there are people out there looking for the information.
So making money online through a website is obviously about getting visitors. It’s about entering a market and building your site into that market as an authority, and it’s about either selling a product, selling a service, or selling advertising.
Obviously, there are other ways to make money online. You can become a freelancer. There are many freelancer and outsourcing opportunities out there. Through these opportunities, you can sell your services so that you can exchange your time for money and there are many companies out there that are buying the service of staff, which is either cheaper or more convenient for them. There are plethora of jobs available out there from data entry to transcription, article writing to search engine optimization, sales to programming and web design. Anything that can be done virtually is done virtually by outsourcers and freelancers.
So what other opportunities make money? Another opportunity is in buying websites. Buy websites that aren’t necessarily being promoted well and then add to them a different flavor so they can be promoted more successfully. Perhaps just adding adverts to them so they can be more successful in a financial capacity.
So just about anyone that is willing to learn can nowadays make money online. In the future, we’ll write some articles about specific ways to make money online.
